Scientists have found part of the brain that triggers out-of-body experiences

www.npr.org/…

Certain drugs can produce an out-of-body experience, so can a pulse of electricity if it's sent to the right place in the brain. NPR's Jon Hamilton reports on a brain area that seems to keep us attached to our physical selves - well, most of the time.

  • In The Red Book, psychiatrist Carl Jung documented his personal explorations into the depths of his mind through vivid daydreams and visions.
  • Jung believed the human psyche includes a personal unconscious and a collective unconscious, which he described as a universal, inherited layer of the mind that houses universally shared patterns or symbols called archetypes.
  • While not a scientific pursuit, the results of his experiment are fascinating bigthink.com/…
  • .
  • There were many similarities, but also some profound differences

anterior precuneus:

Since that meeting, Parvizi and his team have tracked down a part of the brain that may be involved in out-of-body experiences. The culprit is a small sliver of tissue, buried deep within the fold running down the top of the brain, called the anterior precuneus.Jul 24, 2023

An out-of-body experience (OBE or sometimes OOBE) is a phenomenon in which a person perceives the world from a location outside their physical body. An OBE is a form of autoscopy (literally "seeing self"), although this term is more commonly used to refer to the pathological condition of seeing a second self, or doppelgänger.

The term out-of-body experience was introduced in 1943 by G. N. M. Tyrrell in his book Apparitions,[1] and was adopted by researchers such as Celia Green,[2] and Robert Monroe,[3] as an alternative to belief-centric labels such as "astral projection" or "spirit walking". OBEs can be induced by traumatic brain injuriessensory deprivationnear-death experiencesdissociative and psychedelic drugsdehydrationsleep disordersdreaming, and electrical stimulation of the brain,[4] among other causes. It can also be deliberately induced by some.[5] One in ten people has an OBE once, or more commonly, several times in their life.[6][7]

Psychologists and neuroscientists regard OBEs as dissociative experiences occurring along different psychological and neurological factors.

In the Paranormal

Writers in the fields of parapsychology and occultism have written that OBEs are not psychological and that a soul, spirit or subtle body can detach itself out of the body and visit distant locations. Out-of-the-body experiences were known during the Victorian period in spiritualist literature as "travelling clairvoyance". In old Indian scriptures, such a state of consciousness is also referred to as Turiya, which can be achieved by deep yogic and meditative activities, during which yogis may be liberated from the duality of mind and body, allowing them to intentionally leave the body and then return to it. The body carrying out this journey is called "Vigyan dehi" ("Scientific body"). The psychical researcher Frederic Myers referred to the OBE as a "psychical excursion".[79] An early study that described alleged cases of OBE was the two-volume Phantasms of the Living, published in 1886 by the psychical researchers Edmund Gurney, Myers, and Frank Podmore

Why scientists haven’t cracked consciousness

The science of consciousness still has no theory.

Can consciousness exist without a brain?
Neuroscience today says consciousness is generated by and localized in the brain because it emerges from brain activity. Alternatively, we propose that consciousness may not originate in the brain, although some aspects of human perception of consciousness may be dependent on the brain.https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov › pmc

Comments :

HAMILTON: It's not just electrical stimulation that can confuse the brain, so can the mind-bending anesthetic ketamine. Patrick Purdon, a researcher at Harvard, has been studying the drug's effects on the brain. He says it acts a lot like brain stimulation when it comes to the anterior precuneus.

Which is apparently the same chemical being used to treat some refractory cases of depression! Curious.

Metaphysical studies generally seek to explain inherent or universal elements of reality which are not easily discovered or experienced in our everyday life. As such, it is concerned with explaining the features of reality that exist beyond the physical world and our immediate senses.

We must still be able to work together as human beings. This is the internet, where hostility and negativity come all too easy. So we must necessarily have and enforce standards of behavior.

These are not the “Terms and Conditions” that you must accept to sign up for a user account. The expectations as outlined here are enforced by community moderation—that is, the community itself helps police bad behavior. How?

Remember that there are real people on the other end of your communication, along with thousands of others who may read but never reply. Respect the diversity in our community of users, readers, and allies.argument, not an attack. Remember, other people are just as passionate, committed, and ornery as you are. That’s supposed to be an advantage for us, right? Democrats boast about having a big tent. Learn from those who oppose you; let their challenges help you formulate your positions more clearly and draw upon better evidence.

Recognize and avoid microaggressions. Microaggressions are subtle slights, comments, gestures, and behaviors that convey implicit biases against marginalized groups and people. Microaggressive comments and behavior are often unintentional but that does not mitigate the harm to the recipient. Examples include making a comment that perpetuates stereotypes, denying or rejecting someone’s reported experience because yours is different"www.dailykos.com/...
